In 2009, Meryl Streep starred with Alex Baldwin in It’s Complicated. Like most films directed by Nancy Meyers (Private Benjamin, Parent Trap (II), The Intern) it’s a lightweight, feel-good romp.
Jane (Streep) and Jake (Baldwin) are a divorced couple with three grown children. Jake is now married to a younger woman (Lake Bell) who has an annoying young son. Jane is still single and spends time hanging out with her gal pals… Joanne (Mary Kay Place), Trish (Rita Wilson) and Diane (Ali Wentworth). Sadly, this terrific trio of friends doesn’t get nearly as much screen time as they deserve!
After a night of drinking in a hotel, Jane and Jake find themselves in bed together and an affair between the two begins. It is an affair that Jake wants to continue but Jane is constantly questioning. Simultaneously, Jane finds herself romantically interested in Adam (Steve Martin), an architect who is working on the expansion of her home.
There are some truly laugh-out-loud moments, but not enough to push this film into an “A” category. I was pleased that in one scene where Streep and Martin’s characters get stoned, Martin didn’t morph into his all-too-familiar “wild and crazy guy” territory. Kudos to him for his restraint.
It's Complicated is a very nice film to watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Neither spectacular nor disappointing, it was simply a fun and enjoyable frolic.
